Natural Dye Workshop with Brece Honeycutt

Join artist Brece Honeycutt for a Natural Dye Workshop at the Al Held Foundation. Al Held choose the farmstead in Boiceville, NY not just for the barns destined to be studios, but for the landscape, now filled with native trees and plants. For our workshop, we will walk around the property, identify potential dye sources gleaned from leaves, bark and pods and learn how to use these to make dyes on cotton, silk and wool. We will also discuss how to mordant cloth and why this is an important step when dyeing.

This workshop is designed for both the beginner and intermediate dyer, focusing on foraged materials from the Hudson Valley. We will make dyes with gathered dyestuffs, as well as discuss varied uses and potentials for dyes. Participants will leave with dyed samples and information to begin harvesting and dyeing from your surroundings. Learning one’s landscape is a pathway to discovering the natural palette.

Brece Honeycutt makes history and land based work. Her work with natural dyes began over 10 years ago when relocating from an urban environment to rural Western, MA. She documents the surrounding landscape on both cloth and paper, and transforms these into books and installations, as evidenced by work done when Artist-in-Residence at Hancock Shaker Village (Pittsfield, MA) in 2020 and Naumkeag (Stockbridge, MA) during the summers of 2018 and 2019.
